Site Planning and Landscape Design

Maine Fishing Camp

Nothing is more important in the process of designing a new building than understanding the site: the slope of the land and the way water runs on it; soil and bedrock characteristics; the sun's path at all seasons; prevailing winds; the value and potential growth of vegetation and trees; potential views of landscape features; the location of actual or potentially adjacent structures; and land planning regulations. All must be mapped and understood before thinking in any detail about how the spaces of a building can be arranged.

Gardens, Gothic House, Portland, Maine

We have considerable experience in all aspects of site planning and landscape design, however, we often collaborate with a landscape architecture or civil engineering firm if the site is complicated or the clients’ needs warrant their involvement. We have excellent working relationships with several New England firms and will suggest choices to our clients based on the particular demands of the project. We also work directly with local site work contractors, arborists and land surveyors to help us evaluate existing conditions and permitting issues.
